Austria is heating twice as fast as the planet – and we’re almost out of time! Austria is warming at a breakneck +3.1 °C since 1900 – twice the global average. The glaciers are melting, floods are raging, forests are gasping, and the clock is ticking. This isn’t future talk. It’s now.

The Second Austrian Assessment Report on Climate Change (AAR2) just dropped the most urgent climate science for Austria. The AAR2 is a report by the Austrian Panel on Climate Change (APCC). Released June 17, 2025, led by Climate Change Centre Austria alongside IIASA, ÖAW, University Innsbruck, and BOKU. A massive synthesis – about 800 pages – built by ~200 scientists, reviewing >5,000 studies. Modeled after The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) structure, includes 8 chapters: from physical changes and ecosystems to mobility, economy, governance, Alpine focus, and transformation pathways. It’s massive, evidence-based, and terrifying – but also packed with real solutions. It’s basically a survival guide for the Alps.
The Alps are in trouble. So are we.
- Heatwaves, floods, and droughts are here to stay – and get worse.
- Tourism, farming, forests, and our cozy winters? All under threat.
- Austria’s CO₂ budget is nearly zero. If we want to stick to the Paris Agreement, we must act now.
The good news: We know what to do
AAR2 is clear: solutions exist. We just need the will. Here’s what Austria must do (and how you can help):
1. Electrify Everything
Switch to electric heat pumps. Push for clean public transit. Say bye to gas-guzzlers.
2. Eat & Buy Smarter
Eat more plant-based meals. Support local, seasonal, and low-carbon goods.
3. Protect Nature
Plant trees. Support rewilding projects. Choose vacation spots that respect the environment.
4. Demand Climate Leadership
Vote for climate-forward policies. Join local climate groups. Hold leaders accountable.
5. Talk About It
Normalize climate action. Share facts. Be loud.
What you do today matters
Imagine winter without snow. Rivers without flow. Summers that suffocate.
But also: imagine a clean-energy Austria. Greener cities. Resilient forests. Alpine tourism that thrives without killing the planet.
AAR2 doesn’t sugarcoat it – but it hands us the map. It’s time to move.
