Berlin store check – Der Berg ruft & Boarderline
Berlin store check – Der Berg ruft & Boarderline. Since I’ve been living in Berlin for a while, it’s time to introduce the best winter sports store in the German capital. Although my Austrian homeland is far away, I feel a bit at home here. Last weekend I spoke to co-founder Holger about the early days in Berlin and today’s store concept. Enjoy reading!
Der Berg ruft & Boarderline
Holger, when did you start with Der Berg ruft & Boarderline?
As a passionate skier and ski instructor, I opened the store with my friends Norbert and Bernd in Neukölln in 1987. The second stop was at Köpenicker Straße 9. Then we went to Schlesische Straße 26, where the store has been for 13 years.
How did you come to ski as a native Berliner?
Firstly about our families who were enthusiastic about winter sports. Secondly about my school that used to organize ski journeys to Austria in the 80ties.
How big is your shop?
We present equipment from leading manufacturers of skis, ski boots and bindings under the name Der Berg ruft. In addition to boot fitting and ski wear, we have ski helmets, ski goggles, touring skis, products for avalanche safety and cross-country skiing equipment. Under the name Boarderline we are Berlin’s most famous snowboard shop and the largest Burton retailer in Berlin and Brandenburg. Both concepts are shown on an area of approx. 600m².
What are the special features of Der Berg ruft & Boarderline?
Skis & snowboards in one location (Smiling). Honestly said, we do not appeal to cheap customers. We rather focus on brands that are rare and specialised, but in general our range of products varies from beginner to experienced. In addition to sales and extensive advice, service plays a major role. Our machine park is equipped in such a way that we can also provide quick, immediate service. That makes us unique in Berlin.
Do you have favorite ski brands?
Well, I like to ski Stöckli, Atomic and K2. Of course brands we carry in our store.
Where do you personally like to ski? Do you have some favorite spots?
I like to be on the slopes around the Arlberg, Samnaun and the Dolomites.
We live in turbulent times right now, what is changing in the winter sports sector?
Overall, the sales in the ski industry have declined. The renting sector is playing an increasingly important role. We’ll rent 600 to 700 skis the upcoming winter.
How do you perceive the topic of sustainability in winter sports? Does it matter to you? Do you choose your brand range according to sustainable criterias?
In any case! We carry ski wear brands like PICTURE or PYUA, which are very dedicated to the topic. It’s visible in the use of recycled materials or in the transparency of the supply chain. More and more customers are asking for it.
Thanks Holger for the nice conversation!
